Schools to play in holiday tourneys

December 24, 2013 | 09:14 AM

Prior to Christmas Day (today), the South Central girls' and boys' basketball teams will have begun play in the Gibson Southern Classic. The Rebels teams aren't the only Harrison County schools packing the buses for trips around the southern half of the state for holiday tournaments.

The Corydon Central boys' and girls' teams, along with the Lanesville boys, will also participate in tournaments the rest of the week and into next.

Off to a quick 4-0 start to the season, the Corydon Central boys will play in the Perry-Spencer Classic (PSC) at host sites Tell City and South Spencer. Eight teams are scheduled to participate from Dec. 27 to 30.

Ranked No. 7 in the latest Class 3A poll, the Panthers will open the tournament Friday at 8:15 p.m. against Tell City on the Marksmen home court. Crawford County also is in the tourney and will face Class 2A No. 9 Perry Central (6:30 p.m.) prior to the Corydon Central-Tell City match-up.

Other participants include Boonville, Heritage Hills, Forest Park and South Spencer.

Meanwhile, the Lady Panthers will head west to the always-competitive Vincennes Rivet Tournament, played at Vincennes University. Among the teams in the event include Class A No. 3 Vincennes Rivet and Class 2A No. 2 Heritage Christian. Four state championships have been won by Heritage Christian since 2006, while Rivet nabbed one in 2011.

Corydon Central will open against North Knox at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. The second round of games will take place Friday night with the placement games going on Saturday.

The field also includes Vincennes Lincoln, Indianapolis Howe and Pike Central.

Pool play for six teams is the set-up for the Springs Valley Tournament for boys' basketball teams. Headed to the high school home of legend Larry Bird, Lanesville has been slated to Pool A alongside West Washington and Northeast Dubois. Pool B consists of Springs Valley, Loogootee and Milan.

The Eagles will open the tournament against Northeast Dubois at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. They'll face West Washington on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. Final placement games will take place later on Saturday.

The South Central boys' and girls' basketball teams are slated to participate in the Gibson County Classic, which began Monday and will wrap up Saturday.

Both events feature eight boys' and eight girls' teams, with the format being three-game pool play followed by a placement game. Match-ups will take place at four venues: Gibson Southern, Oakland City, Princeton and Wood Memorial.

Two games remain in pool play for the Rebels boys: vs. Mount Carmel (Ill.) (Thursday, 6:30 p.m. at Oakland City) and Evansville Reitz (Friday, 8:15 p.m. at Oakland City); and girls: vs. Mount Carmel (Ill.) (Thursday, 8:15 p.m. at Oakland City) and Evansville Reitz (Friday, 6:30 p.m. at Oakland City).

One of the big draws to the event will be Mount Carmel senior Tyra Buss, a Indiana University signee who was the 2013 Illinois Ms. Basketball. She has more than 3,400 points in her career and is averaging 45.7 points per game this year.
