Postponements litter winter storm athletic weekend

CC-NH PP'd for first time since '90

December 11, 2013 | 11:33 AM

Players and fans eager for the re-match of last season's thrilling Class 3A Sectional semi-final game between Corydon Central and North Harrison — a one-point win by the Panthers — had to put excitement on hold last Friday.

Slated for the usual early season battle between the blue and white versus the black and gold was postponed due to the mixture of rain, sleet, ice and snow on Friday.

The tale of the last time the battle between the cats was postponed may not be believable to the players who fill the rosters of both schools.

Take fans back to 1990, the night the lights went out in Corydon, for the last postponement between the rivals. With Corydon Central leading 29-25 late in the second quarter, the Corydon Central High School gymnasium went dark. A transformer issue in downtown Corydon caused the game to be postponed, which was completed Jan. 29, 1991. The Panthers closed out the matchup with a 54-52 win.

John Nolot, father of Austin Nolot, starting forward for the current crop of Cougars, was part of the 1990 black-out.

Although it was inclement weather this time around, the two teams won't wait long for the next installment of the series. They'll plan to tip the ball tomorrow (Thursday) in Ramsey with a 6 p.m. junior varsity start, followed by the varsity at 7:30.

Both teams will enter the game with 1-0 records while each received votes in the latest Class 3A poll.

Lanesville's attempt to halt a five-game skid to Southern Athletic Conference rival Borden was also put on hold. Slated to play last Friday, the boys' basketball game has been rescheduled for Friday, Jan. 3.

The Braves are coming off a season in which they hoisted the Class A State Championship.

Due to the postponement of the Borden game, the Lanesville Athletic Dept.'s silent auction will now take place Friday, Dec. 20, when the Eagles host Henryville.

Also postponed Friday was the South Central girls' basketball team's trip to Tell City. A make-up date for that game has yet to be determined.

Saturday postponements

Three girls' basketball games scheduled for last Saturday have been rescheduled: Crothersville at South Central to Jan. 18, 1:30 p.m.; Corydon Central at Silver Creek to Jan. 16, 7:30 p.m.; and North Harrison at Columbus East to Jan. 3, 7:30 p.m.

On the boys' side, Saturday's games that were postponed include North Harrison at Henryville (new date yet to be determined); Evansville Day at South Central (now set for Feb. 22, 7:30 p.m.); and Lanesville at Paoli (rescheduled for Dec. 18, 7:30 p.m.).

Cancellations from Saturday that will not be made up were the Providence wrestling six-way that Corydon Central was slated to participate in, along with the Madison Invitational swim meet.

Lanesville vs. Medora triple-header

Medora will host a triple-header of sorts when it welcomes Lanesville on Saturday. Starting at 4 p.m., the Lanesville girls' varsity basketball team will take on Medora.

Following the girls, the boys' junior varsity teams will play one another at 6 p.m. The night will close with Lanesville's varsity boys playing Medora at 7:30.
