A fundraiser completely organized by Lanesville Junior-Senior High School freshmen for the Relay for Life of Harrison County and the American Cancer Society will be Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lanesville Jaycee Building, the building's parking lot and the nearby basketball courts.
Lanesville Life Fest was organized by Allison Schalk's ninth-grade students.
"After we had written business letters to disease organizations, written research reports on genetic diseases, read 'Fault in Our Stars' and presented persuasive presentations to community members, including a state representative, I wanted the students to actually do something positive in our community," Schalk said.
The class decided it would raise money for Relay for Life of Harrison County and the ACS since so many of the students used cancer as the focus of their studies.
Lanesville Life Fest will be a four-hour family fun day with game booths, dunk tank, ring toss, football throw, red wagon races, basketball, crafts, a duck pond, sack races, a bounce house, a deejay, a silent auction and a hot dog and hamburger lunch.
Tickets for the games are two for $1 or 25 for $10. Lunch prices are $4 for a hot dog meal and $5 for a hamburger meal (meals come with chips, a cookie and a drink). Free-will donations will be accepted at the event.
There will also be a Hunger Games Triathlon at 2 p.m. for people ages 12 to adult, with a photo scavenger hunt, obstacle course and a mini-archery competition with a cash prize for the winner. The cost to enter the triathlon is $10.
"All of this has been organized by the kids; I have simply guided them in the process," Schalk said. "They wrote all the business letters soliciting donations and called all the businesses themselves."
Schalk said there are plenty of giveaways, and the group is still accepting donations, be it monetary, silent auction items or giveaways. She also said if a group would like to get involved, they can contact her and set up a game booth that children can play throughout the day.
