FROZEN: Polar vortex grips area

January 08, 2014 | 10:29 AM

A rare polar vortex — air that has circulated around the Artic region and then brought south by the jet stream — in this region placed an icy grip here and elsewhere across the Midwest Sunday night into yesterday (Tuesday).

Monday's low temperature in Corydon — after the cold front and with wind gusts reaching 25 mph blew through — was negative 5.2 degrees, with the high temperature being zero. Tuesday's low was negative 4.4 degrees.

Though the mercury barely moved, few problems were reported on area roadways. Precipitation that fell through Sunday was expected to freeze; however, gusty winds did more to dry the moisture than to freeze it in many areas. Most of the snow landed north of here, with Indianapolis getting nearly a foot of the frozen precipitation.

Schools in Harrison County closed Monday and Tuesday — and most were on a two-hour delay Wednesday — due to the cold temperatures. Because of the extreme conditions, state Supt. of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz authorized schools to apply for a waiver from the required 180 days of instruction. Superintendents of Indiana schools were notified via e-mail or an automatic calling system that a waiver was available for Monday and Tuesday.

Historically, the last time the mercury dipped below zero was in January 2009, and, in January 2004, temperatures reached minus 5 degrees, and, in February 1996, the low temp was minus 7.

Area residents — and heaters — will get a bit of a break this weekend as a gradual warm-up should bring temperatures to the upper 40s and lower 50s.

Polar Vortex Is A Hoax: Limbaugh
    January 10, 2014 | 04:06 PM

Rush Limbaugh said: "We are having a record-breaking cold snap in many parts of the country. And right on schedule the media have to come up with a way to make it sound like it's completely unprecedented. Because they've got to find a way to attach this to the global warming agenda, and they have. It's called the "polar vortex." The dreaded polar vortex.

Do you know what the polar vortex is? Have you ever heard of it? Well, they just created it for this week !They're in the middle of a hoax, they're perpetrating a hoax, but they're relying on their total dominance of the media to lie to you each and every day about climate change and global warming !

If you can rewrite the laws of atmospherics to suit your political agenda, I guess science is neat."

So the polar vortex is nothing more than a liberal invention. Limbaugh said so, so that settles it...for a large number of Americans.

Al Roker says that, according to the 1959 American Meteorological Society's Glossary of Meteorology, the "polar vortex" is "the large-scale cyclonic circulation in the middle and upper troposphere centered generally in the polar regions."

Unfortunately, Roker is part of the "liberal media," so he MUST be dismissed out-of hand. But it's interesting to think that the liberals have been plotting this since 1959, for 54 years. Until Limbaugh revealed it, I had no idea.

Global warming is real. Anyone willing to open their eyes can see it. The glaciers are melting. The polar caps are melting. The oceans around the polar caps have become diluted to the point where the water freezes more easily. A huge hole has opened in our ozone above the polar caps. We are speeding up an ice age by 10000 years. We are leaving our children and grandchildren a nightmare.

We are so selfish and conceited we deny the problem exists. Ignoring it will not make it go away. The last glacier scraped Indiana flat all the way to the southern border. The United Stated will no longer exist. We may already be too late.

Rush Limbaugh is not an expert on much of anything other than leading sheep.

    Think for yourself once.
