Fire displaces Corydon family

December 31, 2013 | 08:36 AM

A Corydon family, including two adults and four children (ages 17, 11, 13 and 5), was burned out of a rental home the day after Christmas.

According to Jeremy McKim, assistant chief of the Harrison Township Volunteer Fire Dept., firefighters were dispatched at 7:36 a.m. to the scene of a home along Lincoln Hills Road south of downtown Corydon.

When emergency personnel arrived nine minutes later, the entire rear portion of the house was on fire. It took about an hour to bring the blaze under control.

"We made a defensive attack and knocked the main body of the fire down then made an offensive attack and completed putting out the fire," McKim said.

According to McKim, the main body of the fire was contained to a room on the rear of the structure; however, the fire also extended into the kitchen and dining room area as well.

The dwelling and many of the family's belongings suffered smoke and water damage.

McKim said that the male homeowner, who recently moved to the area and is a preacher in New Salisbury, suffered burns to his hands but was treated and released from Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services in New Albany.

The Indiana State Fire Marshal investigated the fire and listed the cause as undetermined.

Assisting the Harrison Township Volunteer Fire Dept. at the scene were firefighters from the Heth Township Volunteer Fire Dept. and Harrison County Emergency Medical Services.
