Special postmark celebrates Corydon's state history

October 23, 2013 | 09:08 AM

The United States Postal Service is celebrating the history of Indiana's first state capitol with a special commemorative postmark.

The postmark is the collaboration of USPS supervisor Melissa Murphy and artist Dennis Sieg of Depauw. The design features the name Wyandotte Woods that is part of O'Bannon Woods State Park, named after the late Gov. Frank O'Bannon. It also features Indian Creek after the Big and Little creeks; a liberty tree representing the Constitution Elm which is near the Old Capitol Building in downtown Corydon; and wildlife, including a hawk and dove; the year 1765 to signify the Stamp Act; and 19 stars representing Indiana as the 19th state.

"Corydon is very significant to Indiana history," said Murphy who, with Sieg, designed a postmark for Milltown in 2012. "I enjoy studying local history and doing the research for postmarks."

Unlike most postmarks, this particular one has no ending date, which allows tourists, collectors and customers the opportunity to use the postmark at any time. There is no charge for the cancellation as long as it's applied to first-class postage.

The postmark will be available from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Corydon Post Office and from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, at the Old Capitol Building, located at 126 Walnut St. After that, the postmark will be available during normal business hours at the post office.

Bec Riley, administrator of the Corydon Capitol Site Historic Site, said the admission fee will be waived next Wednesday for anyone who wishes to attend the Postmark America event. There will be a special donation box set up, with any proceeds that day going into a designated fund to help with the preservation efforts of the Constitution Elm.

Mail-order requests for the postmark can be sent to: Postmaster, P.O. Box 9998, Corydon, IN 47172-9998.
